Myeongdong has similar branch names. Use the Korean address and NAVER Map guide to confirm the 27 Myeongdong 8-gil pin before walking there.

A shopping plan that prevents decision fatigue

Large flagship stores are useful but overwhelming. Use this order rather than browsing every shelf.

  1. Set a routine goal: choose one or two needs—such as gentle cleansing, barrier care, daily sunscreen or a lip product—before entering.
  2. Save evidence: photograph the front and ingredient list of a product you already tolerate. Staff can compare the format even when the brand is unavailable.
  3. Set a total budget in won: promotions often require two units or a specific bundle. Compare the total price, not only the discount badge.
  4. Test color and texture first: use store testers only where permitted. Do not open a sealed retail unit.
  5. Keep the refund decision for checkout: have your passport ready before payment, not after the receipt is closed.

Adding a drink or dessert stop? Read the Korea café etiquette guide before assuming whether to order or find a seat first.

What to look for by need

Need Useful product category What to compare
Remove sunscreen or makeup Cleansing oil, balm or micellar water Texture, fragrance, eye-area directions and whether a second cleanser is recommended
Simple daily cleanse Low-pH or gentle foaming cleanser Skin feel after rinsing, fragrance and package size
Dry or irritated-feeling skin Barrier-focused cream or lotion Ceramides, humectants, fragrance and how it layers under sunscreen
Convenient travel care Toner pads, sheet masks or mini sets Individual wrapping, liquid limits and cost per use
Sun protection Face sunscreen or sun stick SPF/PA label, finish, water-resistance instructions and amount needed
Small practical item Hydrocolloid patches or lip care Patch size, adhesive format, tint and fragrance

Cosmetics can irritate skin and are not a substitute for medical treatment. Patch-test unfamiliar products when practical, stop if you develop a reaction, and ask a pharmacist or clinician about persistent skin problems. Avoid buying a product only because it is viral; the best purchase is one that fits your routine and skin tolerance.

How the immediate tax refund works

Under the current national guidance, eligible foreign visitors generally stay in Korea for no more than six months, buy at least ₩15,000 in qualifying goods, take the goods out of Korea within three months, and keep them new, unopened and unused for the refund process.

Immediate-refund limits

  • One transaction must be at least ₩15,000 and under ₩1,000,000.
  • Total immediate-refund purchases during the trip must be ₩5,000,000 or less.
  • Show your passport before paying so eligibility can be checked and the tax can be deducted at checkout.
Korea tourist tax refund limits

At the checkout

  1. Before the cashier closes the transaction, say “tax refund” and show your passport.
  2. Confirm whether this purchase qualifies for immediate refund or will issue a separate tax-refund voucher.
  3. Check the final charged amount and keep the receipt, refund document and unopened goods together.

The cash benefit is not automatically the full 10% VAT. Refund operators deduct fees, so the actual refund is commonly lower. Compare the final amount on the terminal rather than estimating it yourself.

If you receive a general refund voucher

  • A normal sales receipt alone is not enough; obtain the separate tax-refund document.
  • For airport processing, keep your passport, purchased goods and voucher accessible.
  • If the goods will go in checked baggage, complete any required customs inspection before handing over the bag.
  • Even if you receive a city refund first, customs export confirmation may still be required when departing.

Payment and language tips

New to everyday systems in Korea? The complete Korea etiquette guide explains queues, cafés, tipping, shoes and useful signs without turning common habits into rigid rules.

  • The official page lists Easy Pay, but specific cards and wallets can change. Keep a second payment method.
  • CJ says multilingual staff can be identified by language flag badges. Show a product photo or written ingredient name if pronunciation is difficult.
  • Photograph the shelf label with the exact product variant before going to checkout; many packages look nearly identical.
  • Ask whether a promotion is a bundle, a gift-with-purchase or a membership-only offer. The displayed headline may not be the final condition for every visitor.

Common mistakes

  • Going to the wrong flagship: use the 27 Myeongdong 8-gil pin for Central Myeongdong Town.
  • Presenting the passport after payment: immediate refund must be processed during checkout.
  • Opening goods too soon: refunded goods may need to remain unused and available for customs confirmation.
  • Assuming every purchase gets 10% back: eligibility, limits and operator fees matter.
  • Buying too much liquid: plan checked-baggage space and airline weight limits.
  • Treating skincare claims as medical advice: cosmetics are not treatments for diagnosed conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my physical passport?

Government guidance requires passport-based eligibility verification. Carry the physical passport rather than relying on a photo if you want the least ambiguous checkout process.

Can I use the product before leaving Korea?

Goods claimed for a tourist tax refund are supposed to be taken out within three months and may need to remain unopened and unused for customs confirmation. Do not open them until your departure procedure is complete.

Is every item in the store eligible?

No. Eligibility depends on the traveler, transaction, goods and retailer system. Ask at checkout and keep the issued documents.

Which Myeongdong Olive Young is larger now?

The newer Central Myeongdong Town is the current large foreign-visitor-focused store. Older articles may still describe the 53 Myeongdong-gil location as the largest, so check the publication date and address.
