The best default route to Hongdae is the AREX All-Stop train. It runs directly from both Incheon Airport terminals to Hongik University Station with no transfer. Do not board the AREX Express: it skips Hongik University and goes nonstop to Seoul Station.

The station is large and connects AREX, Subway Line 2 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. Save your hotel pin before arrival, then follow the exit closest to that pin rather than automatically following the biggest crowd.

Option 1: Direct AREX All-Stop train
First time using public transport in Korea? Read the subway etiquette guide for priority seats, platform lines and luggage.
- After immigration and baggage claim, follow signs for Airport Railroad and the Transportation Center on B1.
- Choose All-Stop Train, not Express Train. Buy a ticket or use a compatible Korean transport card.
- Check that the platform display shows a train continuing past Digital Media City toward Hongik University and Seoul Station.
- Ride directly to Hongik Univ. No transfer is needed.
- At the station, open your hotel map pin and choose the nearest useful exit or elevator.
Fare and travel time
- T1 → Hongik University: ₩4,650 and approximately 53 minutes on the current timetable.
- T2 → Hongik University: ₩5,250 and approximately 59 minutes on the current timetable.
- A single-use ticket costs ₩100 more than the card fare and adds a refundable ₩500 deposit.
Some trains take a few minutes longer. The exact arrival depends on the selected departure, so use the electronic board rather than treating one number as a guarantee.
First and last through trains
- T1: 05:14 first / 23:38 last train that continues through Hongik University.
- T2: 05:08 first / 23:32 last train that continues through Hongik University.
Important: later trains at 23:56 from T1 and 23:50 from T2 terminate at Digital Media City, one part of the route before Hongik University. They do not take you directly to Hongdae.
Why the AREX Express is the wrong train for Hongdae
The AREX Express goes nonstop from the airport to Seoul Station. It does not stop at Hongik University. If you take it, you will pass Hongdae, arrive farther east at Seoul Station and need another subway ride back. Follow the blue all-stop signs and confirm “Hongik Univ.” on the route display.
Option 2: Airport Limousine 6002
Bus 6002 is useful when your hotel is closer to the roadside drop-off than to the AREX station, or when carrying luggage through the station would be difficult.
- Buy a ticket from an airport ticket office or vending machine. Airport-to-Seoul buses are not reserved online and seats are first come, first served.
- At T2, board at B1 Stop 30. At T1, board at 1F Stop 6A-1.
- The downtown sequence is T2 → T1 → Hapjeong → Seogyo-dong → Hongik Univ. → Sinchon.
- The Hongik University drop-off is roadside in front of Olive Young, stop number 14801.

- T2: weekdays 05:14–23:09; weekends/holidays 05:24–23:09.
- T1: weekdays 05:34–23:29; weekends/holidays 05:44–23:29.
The current fare is ₩17,000 for adults and ₩12,000 for children age 6–12. The operator does not guarantee a downtown arrival time because traffic and weather can alter the trip.
Option 3: N6002 night bus
N6002 is the public-transport fallback for some late arrivals. It runs from T2 and T1 through Hongik University, Gwanghwamun, Dongdaemun and Cheongnyangni.

The fare is ₩17,000 for adults and ₩10,000 for children age 6–12. It is marked Ticket Only, so buy the ticket at a machine before boarding.
Hongik University is a drop-off-only stop on this night route. The operator notes that the bus may pass when nobody is getting off. Buy a ticket with Hongik University as the destination and make your stop clear to the driver when boarding.
Option 4: Official taxi
Hongdae is in Mapo-gu, International Taxi Zone B. The official fixed fare is currently ₩75,000 for a sedan and ₩110,000 for an SUV, van or deluxe taxi. Tolls are included and the official international-taxi fixed fare has no late-night surcharge.
Ordinary taxis use the meter and may apply Seoul’s late-night surcharge. In either case, use only the designated airport taxi stand. Do not follow someone offering a ride inside the terminal.
After you reach Hongdae
- Near the AREX station: the train is usually easiest.
- Near Seogyo-dong or the main roadside strip: compare the 6002 drop pin with your hotel.
- Several large suitcases: check whether your route includes an elevator; a taxi or bus may be worth the extra cost.
- Guesthouse on a narrow lane: even a taxi may stop at the nearest accessible road. Keep the full Korean address and phone number available.
Airport bus luggage rules
The standard free allowance is up to two pieces per ticket, each under 20 kg and under 160 cm when length, width and height are added. Excess baggage may cost up to 50% of the passenger fare per additional piece. Keep valuables, medication and travel documents with you rather than in the bus hold.
Common mistakes
- Boarding the Express Train: it does not stop at Hongik University.
- Using the final DMC-terminating train: it stops before Hongdae.
- Assuming the bus stops at the station entrance: the 6002 drop is a roadside stop; compare its pin with your hotel.
- Waiting until boarding to buy a night-bus ticket: N6002 is ticket only.
- Choosing an exit without checking the address: Hongik University Station is large, and a wrong exit can add a long surface walk.
