The short answer: install NAVER Map for place search and door-to-door routes, keep KakaoMap as a useful second local map, and use Seoul Metro’s official Seoul Subway app when you need station, train or disruption details. Before every ride, confirm four things: the station number, line color, direction or terminal station, and exit number. A rechargeable transit card is the simplest payment method for repeated subway and bus trips.

The adult Seoul subway base fare is ₩1,550 with a transit card and ₩1,650 with a single-journey ticket, before distance surcharges. Routes, last trains, station facilities, fares and app behavior can change; check the operator and your app again on the travel day.
The five-minute setup before your first ride
- Install NAVER Map and one backup. NAVER Map supports English, Chinese and Japanese as well as Korean. KakaoMap provides public-transport, walking and real-time bus information. Seoul Subway is the official Seoul Metro app for route, train and station information.
- Save your accommodation in Korean. Keep the exact Korean name, road address and nearest station exit in an offline note. Follow the Korean address search workflow if an English name finds the wrong branch.
- Choose how you will pay. Buy and load a T-money or compatible transit card with Korean won cash if you expect to use both subway and bus. A single-journey card is a workable subway-only fallback.
- Plan the route while you have data. Save a screenshot containing the origin, destination, transfer stations and final exit. Do not save only a colored line with no station names.
- Allow a first-trip buffer. Large interchanges can require a long walk. Add at least 10–15 minutes when you have luggage, need an elevator or must catch a timed admission.
How to read a Seoul subway route
1. Match the station name and number
Most signs show Korean and English, and a station number gives you a language-independent cross-check. For example, two stations can have similar English names while belonging to different lines or cities. Match the name, line number and station number shown by your route app.
2. Check the direction by the next station or terminal
“Inbound” and “outbound” are not reliable traveler labels. The platform sign normally identifies the next station and often the direction by a terminal station. Compare the next station on your route with the station printed on the platform sign before boarding. On circular Line 2, use the next-station check rather than trying to interpret a compass direction.
3. Notice branches and express trains
A line color alone may not tell you whether the train follows the branch you need or stops at your station. Read the train’s destination display and check whether your app marks it as express or all-stop. If uncertain, wait for the next train and show the Korean destination to station staff.
4. Treat exit numbers as part of the address
A large station can place two exits on opposite sides of a highway or several blocks apart. Keep the exit number beside the destination, then follow the numbered signs after the fare gate. Elevators may lead to a different exit; when step-free access matters, check the station facility map and plan the final surface crossing.
Ride the subway step by step
- Find the entrance with the correct station and line. Street entrances show the station name, line and exit number. A nearby underground entrance may belong to a different station complex.
- Choose the correct fare gate. Check the platform direction before tapping. Some stations separate opposing platforms, and changing sides can require staff help or a paid exit.
- Tap one card per traveler. Place the card flat on the reader until the gate confirms it. Do not stack it against another NFC or transit card.
- Follow line color, number and direction together. At a transfer, remain inside the paid area and follow the transfer signs; do not follow an exit sign unless the route explicitly requires an out-of-gate transfer.
- Check the train before boarding. Match the destination or next stop and, where relevant, express status. Let passengers leave before entering.
- Watch the station display and announcement. Count station numbers as a backup. Move toward the door before your stop without blocking it early.
- Tap out at the destination. The system calculates any distance-based fare. If the gate refuses the card, use the staffed gate or fare-adjustment machine rather than forcing through.
- Follow your saved exit number. Recheck the final walking route once above ground because GPS can drift inside large stations.
Common mistakes and the fastest recovery
