The short answer: for most short-term visitors who will ride both subways and buses, buy one physical T-money card per person at a convenience store, add Korean won cash, and tap the same card when entering and leaving every ride. Reload before the balance gets low and spend it down near the end of the trip; a small balance is easier to refund than a large one.

This guide uses Korea Tourism Organization’s May 2026 transportation guide, Seoul’s 2026 visitor guide and current Seoul fare rules. Retail stock, card designs, refund counters and payment methods can change. Ask the seller before loading a large amount.

The card price and stored balance are separate. Paying ₩4,000 for a card and handing over ₩20,000 does not necessarily create a ₩20,000 balance; state the amount you want loaded and check the receipt or balance display. Character, key-chain and special-edition cards may cost more without changing the transit fare.
Where and how to buy a T-money card
Option 1: a convenience store
- Look for a T-money sign at a staffed CU, GS25, 7-ELEVEN, emart24 or another participating store.
- Say “T-money card” or show the Korean name 티머니 카드.
- Choose a basic card unless you specifically want a higher-priced character design.
- Pay for the physical card, then ask to load a separate amount.
- Use Korean won cash. The May 2026 KTO transport guide says foreign-issued credit cards are not accepted for ordinary T-money purchase or top-up.
- Check the balance on the receipt or reader before leaving.
Option 2: a subway station service point
Korea Tourism Organization lists Seoul subway information centers on Lines 1–8, while its May 2026 guide describes customer safety offices on Lines 1–4 and i-Centers on Lines 5–8 as purchase points. Availability is not identical at every station or operator, so use the staffed office as a fallback, not as a promise that every ticket machine sells a new physical T-money card.
Useful Korean request: “티머니 카드 한 장 주세요. 이만 원 충전해 주세요.” means “One T-money card, please. Please load ₩20,000.” Show the amount on your phone if pronunciation is difficult.
How to top up T-money
At a convenience store
- Hand the card to the cashier.
- Say or show the exact amount you want added.
- Pay in Korean won cash.
- Wait for the reader to confirm the top-up.
- Check the new balance before leaving.
At a subway reload machine
- Select English or another supported language.
- Choose the transportation-card recharge option, not single-journey ticket purchase.
- Place the card on the indicated reader and leave it there.
- Select an amount and insert Korean won notes accepted by that machine.
- Wait until the transaction completes before removing the card.
- Confirm the displayed balance and take any change.
Do not confuse the new foreign-card machines with T-money top-up. Since March 17, 2026, new machines at 273 Seoul Metro stations accept international cards for single-journey tickets and short-term Climate Cards. The official May 2026 KTO matrix still marks ordinary prepaid T-money purchase and top-up as cash only and says foreign cards cannot be tapped directly at subway readers.
How to check your balance
- Read the balance shown briefly on a fare gate or bus reader after tapping.
- Place the card on a subway recharge machine and view the balance before choosing an amount.
- Ask a participating convenience-store cashier to check it.
- Keep the last receipt if you are tracking a group budget.
Each traveler should normally carry a separate card. One card can sometimes pay a bus driver-set multi-passenger fare, but the rules are restrictive and subway transfer discounts do not apply to multi-passenger boarding. Separate cards are simpler, faster and less error-prone.
How to refund a remaining T-money balance
The simplest strategy is to stop reloading near the end of the trip and spend a small remainder at a participating convenience store. If you still want cash back, refund limits depend on the outlet. Seoul’s English 2026 visitor guide lists:

- Check the balance and choose an outlet whose published limit covers it.
- Ask whether that exact branch processes T-money balance refunds.
- Confirm the refund amount and any service fee before agreeing.
- Keep the physical card if you want to reuse it and the outlet returns it; otherwise confirm what the process does to the card.
- Do not expect the original card purchase price or decorative-card premium to become stored balance.
A damaged, registered, mobile or unusually high-balance card can follow a different process. The official visitor guide says bank ATMs, Tmoney Town and the mobile app support certain refunds, but those routes can require a Korean account, compatible phone, identity step or specific card type. A short-term visitor should avoid a high unused balance rather than depend on a last-minute airport refund.
Lost card, low balance and error recovery
