The short answer: foreign visitors can book many Korean highway buses with an overseas card, but first identify whether the trip is an express bus or an intercity bus. The Korea Tourism Organization’s current transport guide lists foreign-card options for both express and intercity buses. Routes, seats, boarding credentials and terminal assignments can change, so the reservation and terminal display remain authoritative.

This is a practical starting order, not a promise that every route appears in every service. Klook’s current Korea bus page is for express-bus inventory; the KTO’s May 2026 matrix lists Go Hanpass for both express and intercity bookings.
Express and intercity buses are not interchangeable
Both use highway coaches, but they can have different booking systems and different terminals. Express buses generally connect larger cities with fewer stops. Intercity buses cover many additional cities and may stop en route. A city can have an Express Bus Terminal, an Intercity Bus Terminal, or several terminals in different districts.
Search the departure and arrival terminal, not only the city. Save each Korean terminal name and pin with the Korean-address map workflow. A cheap seat is not useful if it leaves from the other side of Seoul or arrives far from your hotel.
Book the ticket in six steps
- Define the complete route. Check the hotel-to-terminal trip, highway bus and arrival-terminal-to-hotel leg.
- Search both service types. If no express result appears, check whether the route is actually intercity, and vice versa.
- Read the terminal names twice. Match the English result to the Korean terminal name and map pin before payment.
- Enter passenger details exactly. Use the name and other details requested by the booking service; do not invent a Korean phone number.

- Confirm the issued ticket. A card notification or pending charge alone is not a reservation. Save the booking number, departure time, terminal, seat and the service’s boarding instructions.
Do not assume a screenshot is enough to board
Follow the instruction attached to the actual reservation. Some products provide a scannable mobile credential; another route or sales channel may require ticket collection or a printed ticket. If collection is required, arrive early with the reservation details and the identification or payment card requested by the seller.
At an unfamiliar terminal, arrive at least 20 minutes early. Find the correct gate, compare the destination and departure time on the display, then be ready to board 5–10 minutes before departure. Highway buses do not normally have an onboard restroom. Longer services usually make a rest-area stop, but the timing is operational rather than guaranteed.
If the foreign card fails
- Check that overseas online payments are enabled and complete the issuer’s verification screen.
- Retry once after confirming the name, expiry date and billing details.
- Try a second card from a different issuer or network.
- Check the same route in the other KTO-listed visitor service when applicable.
- Use the exact departure-terminal counter or kiosk. KTO’s 2026 guide lists foreign-issued card acceptance at express and intercity terminal machines and counters.
Do not keep submitting payments when a charge is pending. First check whether a ticket or booking number exists, then contact the seller and card issuer if necessary. An authorization that later disappears is still not permission to board.
Bus or KTX?
Compare the door-to-door trip. KTX is usually faster on its main corridors, but a bus may leave closer to your hotel or arrive nearer the historic center. Frequently asked questions
Can foreign tourists pay for Korean bus tickets with an overseas card?
Yes, on supported online services and at terminal counters or machines. Approval still depends on the route, seller, card network, issuing bank and authentication result, so carry a second card.
Do I need a Korean phone number?
Not for the visitor channels listed in this guide when their current flow accepts your overseas details. Never enter a borrowed or invented number. Keep email access and the booking reference available instead.
Can I buy a ticket on departure day?
Usually, if seats remain. Weekends, holidays and popular routes can sell out, so reserve earlier when the trip is fixed and keep a terminal fallback for routes not sold online.
Is the QR code always the bus ticket?
No. Use the boarding instruction for that reservation. A QR code may be valid for one product while another requires collection or printing. A payment receipt is not automatically a boarding credential.
