Korea Google Maps remains convenient when a friend sends a familiar Google pin or when you want to organize saved places before the trip. It can also be a quick public-transport orientation tool. The weakness appears when the next decision is street-level movement: a pin is not the same thing as a working pedestrian route.
Do not assume that a place result is complete because it appears in English. Korean businesses can change names, move, close or have several branches with similar translated names. Copy the exact Korean name, road address and phone number from the booking confirmation, then follow the Korean-address search ladder when English search fails.
Why the 2026 approval is not a launch date
On February 27, 2026, the Korean government conditionally approved Google’s request to export 1:5,000-scale map data. The official decision requires security processing, limits on exported data, protection of sensitive facilities and continuing compliance. That decision allows Google to build fuller navigation; it does not say that every feature switched on that day.
Approval is not availability. Check the route buttons on your own phone. If walking or driving is disabled, do not try to reconstruct a route from the straight-line pin or follow a road that looks close on the map.
This distinction matters because headlines about the approval can age faster than the product. Until Korea Google Maps visibly returns a usable route for your exact mode and endpoints, plan as if the rollout is incomplete.
The practical two-app setup
- Keep Google Maps for discovery. Save attractions, open shared pins and review a broad trip area.

- Save Korean text. Store the place name and road address in your notes, not only a screenshot.
- Use the operator for operations. Railway, airport, venue and bus notices control fares, times, bays, exits and closures.

- Open the same endpoints in Naver Map and compare the arrival point, exit and last connection.
- For time-sensitive travel, open the operator’s official notice before leaving.
- At the destination, match the Korean name or address rather than guessing from the building image.
