The short answer: take your original, valid passport on a Paju DMZ tour. Paju City currently lists a passport, Alien Registration Card or U.S. military ID as acceptable identification for a foreign visitor, but it rejects captured images and identification connected to an expired authorized stay. A tour operator may set a stricter passport-only rule, and security or weather conditions can cancel access even after a reservation is confirmed.

The ID rules and Paju DMZ Peace Tour operating cautions below were checked against Paju City and Korea Tourism Organization pages. The JSA status was checked separately against the latest public tourism guidance and a current operator notice. Military access, tour inventory and substitutions can change without notice, so confirm the exact product with its operator again before departure.
A DMZ tour is not automatically a JSA tour. The standard Paju route usually centers on Imjingak, the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory. Panmunjom’s Joint Security Area—the location associated with the blue conference buildings—is a separate, more restricted program. Do not assume “JSA Museum,” “JSA experience” or a view toward Panmunjom means entry to the Joint Security Area.

Practical rule: if you are visiting Korea on a short stay, carry the physical passport whose name and number were used for the reservation. A resident planning to use an Alien Registration Card should obtain written confirmation from the operator because its own rule may still say “passport.”

There is also a government DMZ Peace Trail theme-route program. Its 2026 notice limits participation to Republic of Korea citizens and requires identity verification. That is a different product from the Paju DMZ Peace Tour sold to foreign visitors, so do not use its booking page as a substitute.
Passport and booking checklist
- Read the stop list, not only the title. Look for the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Imjingak and any added bridge, museum or shopping stop. If the listing says JSA, ask whether it means actual Panmunjom access or only a museum-style experience.
- Match your booking to the document. Enter the name and passport number exactly as the operator requests. If the passport will be renewed before the trip, ask how to update the manifest instead of creating a second booking.
- Save the operator’s ID wording. Paju’s general list does not override a passport-only rule in your confirmation.
- Check the cancellation and substitution policy. Some operators substitute an observatory, museum or bridge when controlled access closes; refund terms vary by product.
- Pack the physical document before pickup. A photograph stored on the phone is a useful backup for ordinary travel recovery, but Paju City says it is not an entry document.
- Reconfirm the evening before and morning of travel. Review the meeting point, time, closure notice and any message from the operator.
Do not send an unredacted passport copy through an improvised channel. If an operator needs advance details, use the secure method named in its official booking flow and ask why the data is required. Avoid posting passport images in public reviews, group chats or social media.

For orientation, open the Seoul Station → Imjingak public-transit route and the exact Imjingak pin. Google Maps is only an orientation tool here: service frequency, the final controlled shuttle and military access must be confirmed with the operator or Paju City.
A tour departing Seoul normally uses its own meeting point and vehicle. Do not travel to Imjingak independently when your booking confirmation says to meet at City Hall, Myeongdong, Hongdae or another pickup. Save the meeting point’s Korean name with the Korean-address and NAVER Map guide.
What happens at Imjingak and the checkpoint?
- Arrive with the whole party. Paju City says ticketing begins only after everyone in the party has reached Imjingak.
- Present original ID. Staff verify the people actually traveling; a reservation alone does not replace this step.
- Use the assigned vehicle and route. Dora Observatory does not allow individual visits, and visitors may not leave the designated course.
- Keep cameras packed on the controlled route. Paju’s current notice prohibits photography, video and drone recording throughout the DMZ Peace Tour course. Do not treat an older visitor photo as current permission.
- Expect the itinerary to change. Security, military operations, severe weather or safety concerns can stop the whole route without advance notice.
The current Paju notice lists ticketing and reserved-ticket issuance from 09:00 to 14:30 and warns that tickets often sell out early. That is a current reference, not a promise of a particular departure. The Third Tunnel page also describes a steep, confined route; visitors with mobility, breathing, blood-pressure or other relevant health concerns should ask about the surface-level alternative rather than forcing the descent.
JSA status: what to book instead
Korea Tourism Organization separates ordinary DMZ sightseeing from the Joint Security Area and warns that access can change abruptly. Its DMZ 101 page, last updated in February 2025, recorded that non-Korean citizen entry to Panmunjom was not available. The current VIP Travel JSA page checked July 27, 2026 says regular JSA tours remain suspended under UNC restrictions and does not publish a reopening date.
That means the defensible choice today is a tour whose value does not depend on entering the JSA. Compare the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory, Imjingak, guide quality, pickup burden, forced-shopping policy and closure fallback. If public JSA access returns later, verify it through a current operator authorized for that program and a fresh official notice; do not rely on a future date inserted into an old marketplace listing.
Common mistakes and fallbacks
- Leaving the passport in the hotel safe. Return for it or accept that entry may be refused; a phone image is not the fallback.
- Assuming an ARC is accepted by every bus company. Paju lists it, but your operator can require the passport. Obtain confirmation before pickup.
- Booking “DMZ + JSA” from an outdated description. Verify whether the JSA is actually operating and whether the booking is immediately confirmable.
- Confusing a JSA exhibition with Panmunjom access. Read every named stop and ask the operator directly.
- Planning an essential event immediately afterward. Return times can move with queues, traffic, substitutions and security procedures.
- Treating Monday as a normal operating day. Paju City lists Monday and specified holidays as closures; check the exact date.
- Taking photos because older posts show cameras. Paju’s current notice bans photography, video and drone recording throughout the Peace Tour course, so keep recording devices packed.
If the controlled route closes, use Imjingak’s public visitor area only if local access remains open, accept the operator’s disclosed substitute, or move the DMZ visit to another day. Keep a separate Seoul plan such as the Gyeongbokgung–Bukchon–Insadong route; do not try to enter another restricted road independently.

Do foreigners need a passport for a DMZ tour?

KTO advises an advance reservation; Paju also lists same-day ticketing from 09:00 to 14:30, subject to early sellout. Reserve when possible and never treat walk-up inventory as guaranteed.
Is the JSA open to foreign tourists now?
The current operator notice checked for this guide says regular JSA tours remain suspended and gives no reopening date. Treat Panmunjom as unavailable unless a fresh authorized operator confirmation and current official access notice both support your date.
Can a child join without a passport?
