The short answer: choose an eSIM for the fastest single-phone setup, a physical SIM when you want airport staff to help or your phone lacks eSIM, and pocket WiFi when several devices need to share one connection. If restaurant or taxi apps may require SMS, buy a plan that explicitly includes a Korean phone number and SMS—not a product described only as “data.”

This guide separates device format from service features. An eSIM can be data-only or data-plus-voice; a physical SIM can also be either. Product names, supported devices, activation rules and identity limits vary, so verify the exact plan before payment.

A Korean 010 number is not the same as Korean legal identity verification.
LG U+ currently says a tourist voice/SMS plan can support SMS signup for restaurant and taxi reservation apps, but not identity verification for banking or government services. Do not buy a tourist SIM expecting it to unlock every resident-only app.
First decide whether you need a Korean phone number
You probably need only data if you will use maps, translation, messaging, email, ride-hailing apps that accept your existing account, and reservations handled by your hotel. In that case, an inexpensive data eSIM can be enough.
Choose a plan explicitly offering a Korean number and SMS when you expect to:
- receive a local reservation confirmation;
- join a restaurant or taxi app that accepts tourist-number SMS;
- give a Korean callback number to a hotel, clinic or delivery service;
- make or receive ordinary domestic calls.
Read the exact product table. LG U+ currently labels its data-plus-voice option as providing a Korean 010 number. Its data-only information also shows product-specific incoming-call/text behavior while separately warning that data-only service cannot be used for SMS verification. The safe rule is simple: if verification matters, buy a plan that explicitly promises the required SMS function.
Option 1: eSIM
An eSIM is a downloaded mobile profile. It is usually the cleanest arrival setup because you can buy it before flying and keep your home SIM in the phone. It works only when the device supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked and is accepted by that Korean provider.
Check before buying
- Dial *#06# and look for an EID, or check the phone’s SIM settings.
- Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked. eSIM capability alone is not enough.
- Compare data-only with data-plus-voice and Korean-number plans.
- Check when the validity clock begins: purchase, installation, arrival or first data use.
- Check whether the provider permits reinstalling or reissuing a deleted profile.
- Save the QR code and instructions somewhere accessible without the phone that will scan them.
LG U+ currently says its travel eSIM needs an internet connection for activation, displays the phone number only after arrival in Korea, and cannot be restored once deleted. Those rules are provider-specific, but they show why “install after I leave the airport” is a fragile plan.
Safe activation sequence
- Read whether the provider allows installation before travel without starting the plan.
- Keep the QR code on a second device or printed copy.
- Connect to trusted airport Wi-Fi after arrival if the profile still needs activation.
- Set the Korea line as mobile-data line and keep data roaming configured exactly as the provider instructs.
- Disable cellular-data switching if it could send data through the expensive home line.
- Open one map page and one message before leaving the terminal.
Once connected, save the hotel with the Korean-address and NAVER Map method before boarding airport transport.
Option 2: physical SIM
A physical travel SIM is useful when the phone lacks eSIM, when you prefer staff-assisted activation, or when a specific voice/SMS product is available only at an airport counter. The phone still needs to be unlocked.
- Back up any SIM-dependent contacts or settings before the trip.
- Bring the passport required for registration and the phone that will use the SIM.
- At the official carrier counter, confirm data, Korean number, incoming/outgoing calls and SMS separately.
- Ask the staff to complete one data test and show where your Korean number appears.
- Store the home SIM in a labeled case; it is easy to lose.
- Before departure, check whether you need to cancel, return anything or simply remove the prepaid SIM.
Physical SIM is not automatically better than eSIM for reception. The more important differences are compatibility, service features, support and the inconvenience of a physical swap.
Option 3: pocket WiFi
Pocket WiFi creates one portable hotspot for several phones, tablets or laptops. LG U+ currently advertises support for up to ten connected devices, but also warns that performance varies and recommends fewer devices for high-bandwidth use.
Choose it when
- the group usually stays together;
- several devices need data;
- some phones are locked or lack compatible eSIM;
- you are willing to carry and charge one more device.
Do not choose it when
- group members frequently separate;
- you need a Korean mobile number or SMS;
- you might forget the return deadline;
- carrying a power bank and another charger will be a burden.

What about home-carrier roaming?
Roaming can be the least complicated solution for one or two days, especially when receiving messages on your usual number matters. Compare the total trip price, high-speed data allowance, hotspot support and incoming-call charges. A “daily pass” can become expensive when it activates automatically on every travel day.
Dual-SIM travelers can keep the home line on for incoming SMS while using the Korea line for data, but disable roaming data on the home line unless the carrier plan covers it. Your phone’s labels may differ, so test the settings before departure.

- Record the Korean phone number if the plan includes one.

Troubleshooting
The eSIM installed but has no data
- Confirm that the Korea profile is switched on.
- Set it as the mobile-data line.
- Follow the provider’s current data-roaming and APN instructions.
- Restart the phone before deleting anything.
- Do not delete the profile unless support confirms it can be reissued.
I cannot receive the app verification SMS
Check whether the plan is data-only, whether the app accepts tourist numbers, and whether the number has fully registered on the Korean network. A 010 number does not guarantee resident identity verification. Ask the hotel or business for a manual booking route rather than repeatedly buying another data-only plan.
The phone number is not visible before departure
This can be normal for a provider that assigns or displays it only after the phone reaches Korea. LG U+ currently states that its eSIM number appears in device settings after arrival. Save the booking reference instead of inventing a number for pre-trip forms.
The group separated with the pocket WiFi
Only the person carrying the hotspot keeps the connection. Agree on a meeting point and store critical addresses offline on every phone before separating.
